The Great Mustache Debate

This post will be a debate, for better and worse, the mustache. I have decided to research this topic seeing as my friends and I that are currently in the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City are growing mustaches much to the chagrin of our wives and loved ones.

A moustache (spelled mustache in the USA and Texas) is facial hair usually grown on the upper lip and below the nose. Often the term implies that the wearer grows only the upper lip hair and chooses to shave the hair on his chin and cheeks.

Often, mustaches in movies and other medias are portrayed are worn by those that are in great power or of diabolical motives. Good guys include almost all civil war era movie Sgt. & Col. (recent ex. Tom Cruise in The Last Samuri). Bad Guys, so numerous but include cartoons, comics, and movies.

There are a number of different kinds of mustache including the toothbrush (ie. Hitler, Chaplin), Fu Manchu, Pancho Villa, and handlebar varieties. All of these beg the question, how do you take care of a finely tuned mustache? That is where the specific mustache combs, scissors, and attention daily come in. Currently there are products that are used in conjunction with mustache care and can provide a healthier shine as well as protection. Just for Men is a product used to make a mustache seem visibly healthier and thicker and is applied bi-monthly as directed. Once this is done it is very important to keep your mustache free from debris and other contaminants.

Therefore the mustache cup. This is a device used by those that are sporting any variety of mustache that has been mentioned above and including those unmentioned. You can see that there is a protective cover for your mustache that will prevent such debris as froth and liquid from entering ones mustache and causing an embarassing situation.

In addition to all the maintanence that it takes to upkeep a mustache, there are a number of pros that are won because of a nice piece of facial hair. Movember is a contest that is held in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada each November. The event is an annual, month-long charity event involving the growing of mustaches. I, for one, am a little bit embarassed that the good ole US of A has not adopted this month as a charity for prostate cancer like many of our allies and friends have. In the year 2005 in the United States, there were an estimated 230,000 new cases of prostate cancer. Movember it is for me!

Beard Team USA website, or find one of the numerous charities. Either way a mustache is usually grown out of the love of it and not just because. If just for a laugh or curing diseases I am proud to say that I have grown a mustache and am not ashamed nor will I be.
